Inland Northwest Musicians Young Artists Competition Guidelines

The twentieth annual Inland Northwest Musicians Young Artists Competition will be held on the afternoon of Sunday, March 1, 2020 at Hermiston High School.  This event offers young musicians the opportunity to perform, be adjudicated, receive cash awards, and possibly be selected to play with the Inland Northwest Orchestra in concert on Saturday April 18, 2020.

The competition is open to young people in four age categories:  Elementary Division (through fifth grade), Junior Division (grades 6-8), Senior Division (grades 9-12), and Young Adult Division (through age 25).  All participants must have the recommendation of their private music instructor.  After the Closing date for receipt of applications, all participants will be scheduled for individual audition times on the day of the event.

Entrants will be allowed up to 12 minutes to perform.  The accurate timing for the selection must be given on the application form.  The piece performed must be one that has a published orchestral accompaniment.  Entrants are responsible to provide information concerning the publisher of their selection. 

Two copies of the music must be provided for the use of the adjudicators during the competition.  Photocopies are acceptable, but must be provided by the entrant.  Inland Northwest Musicians cannot make copies.  All copies of music will be returned to each participant at the conclusion of the contest.

All participants will receive adjudication forms and certificates at the conclusion of the contest.  Judging will be based on quality of sound, technique, musicality, and overall performance.  A division winner will be chosen from each division.  Division winners will receive $200 cash prizes.  Some entrants may be selected to perform with the Inland Northwest Orchestra must be available for rehearsals with the orchestra prior to the performance.

Entrants will not be permitted to win in the same division two years in a row unless their performance the second year is on a different instrument/voice than that of the previous year.  Division winners may choose to perform for adjudication only in the following year, if desired.

The completed application form and entrance fee of $25.00 must be received by Saturday, February 22, 2020. The entrance fee is non-refundable.  Applicants will be emailed a schedule of audition times and addition instructions by Tuesday, February 25, 2020.
